Lesson Objective
SWBAT rename fractions as decimals and decimals as fractions.
Lesson Plan
Materials Needed: scrap paper for DN, Example Overhead, white board, dry erase markers, pencils, GP Worksheet, and IND Worksheet.
Vocabulary: whole (or ONE or unit), denominator, numerator, equivalent
……….
Do Now (3 -5 min): The teacher writes the following fractions on the board. Students are instructed to write an equivalent fraction on their scrape paper.
1 50 3 6
5 100 4 9
Opening (2 -3 min): Teacher quickly reviews answers to the Do Now. The teacher should then state the objective, “Yesterday, we developed equivalent fractions using a rule. Today, we are going to focus fractions and decimals. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to rename fractions as decimals and decimals as fractions.”
Direct Instruction (8 - 10 min): The teacher begins with the following problems on the board:
Write the following fractions as decimals:
1 7 32 9
10 10 100 100
Using the Example Overhead the teacher should discuss the answers. The teacher can color the grid sections to show fractional parts. For example:
What fractional part of the square is this? 1 grid is shaded. [ 1 ]
10
How would you write 1 as a decimal? [0.1, one of the ten rows are shaded]
10
The teacher should repeat the same process with the other fractions in tenths, including
3 and 5
10 10
The teacher should then move on to the 100s grid and color/shade in one small square and repeat the same questions.
What fractional part of the square is this? 1 grid is shaded in the top grid. [ 1 ]
100
How would you write 1 as a decimal? [0.01, only one of the 100 squares are shaded]
100
The teacher should repeat the same process with the other fractions in hundredths, including
32 and 8
100 100
Guided Practice (10 min): The teacher then passes out the GP Worksheet. Students are broken into groups of 3 to work on the sheet together.
Independent (10 min): The teacher passes out the IND worksheet. The students are asked to complete it individually and turn it in.
Closing (2-3 min): Teacher calls the attention of the students back toward the front of the class to quickly review the answers to the Independent Practice worksheet/ ask what we learned about.
