Lesson Objective

SW analyze arguments that oppose intelligent design.

Lesson Plan

Lesson Objective:

SW analyze arguments that oppose intelligent design.

Essential Questions:

• What is the main idea that opposes intelligent design?
• What are some reasons not to believe intelligent design’s thesis?

Materials needed:

LCD projector, powerpoint, video
Notes/article/reading against ID

Lesson Plan: I Do

Show a bit of a debate between a creationist and a scientist on the topic of intelligent design.

Lesson Plan: We Do Together

Students and teacher, together, walk through a reading that takes down the concept of ID. We “kill the text” together, marking it up with topic and main idea.

After the reading, we map out the concept therein in terms of a persuasive argument.

Lesson Plan: You Do

Students respond in a brief paragraph to a posted prompt: Give one reason why people believe Intelligent Design is a bad argument. Explain that reason fully.

1. What went well?

2. What would you change?

3. What needs explanation?

Again, the lesson hinges on kids having their misconceptions worked out through debate, so if your class can accommodate some extra time (before the exit-ticket paragraph) for a bit of a discussion or debate, that will really help out the class generally.

The clip I showed at the beginning of class was insightful, intelligent, and charismatically presented, but there's no getting around the fact that the language is too advanced for most seventh-graders, especially those who are behind grade level. I'd probably find a different video, or just cut that part of the lesson altogether, if I were to do this again.

Again, the focus here needs to be on taking down the argument for intelligent design, not on proving that evolution happened. That's not something the kids have access to proof of--they do, however, have the ability to see the holes in ID logic.
