Lesson Objective

SWBAT round whole numbers to the hundred thousands place to the nearest ten and hundred.

Lesson Plan

Materials Needed: DN Worksheet, white board, dry erase markers, GP Worksheet, IND Practice Worksheet
Vocabulary: rounding, estimation, actual, rounding off

Do Now (2 - 3 min): On the board the teacher has the following 4 numbers written with different place values underlined. The teacher hands out the half worksheet and asks the students to record the actual number, round to the underlined place value, and identify the place value of the underlined digit.

Opening (2 -3 min): Teacher quickly reviews answers to the Do Now and then says, “Yesterday we practiced rounding any whole number up to the hundred thousands place. Today, we are going to review rounding numbers to the hundred thousands place but I am going to introduce a new tool to help us round. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to round whole numbers to the hundred thousands place to the nearest ten and hundred..”
 
Direct Instruction/Guided Practice (15 min): Teacher begins “Ok! Let’s review the list of things we know about rounding that we made yesterday. 
 
We know/ learned…
- to round up when the number is over 5
- to round down when the number is 4 or under
- that rounding can help us estimate answers
 
 
Teacher says, “Ok! Today we competed yesterday, so today we are going to review. However, today we are going to practice rounding with a place value chart. When we round today we are going to use this tool.  Watch as I round this number with my PV chart.” Teacher should write the following on the board and each student should have a PV chart to refer to.

The teacher continues, “ I want to round this number to the hundreds place. So my first step is going to be to copy this number into my PV chart, so I know which place I need to round. Watch as I do that.  Then I am going to find the number I am supposed to round, and draw an arrow to the number to the right of it. Why am I drawing an arrow to the right number and not the left? [Answers will vary]. Good job. I use the number to the right to tell me how to round, do I round up or do I round down? If I get confused I can look at the What We Know Chart. Ok, so once my arrow is drawn I can then round, I write my new rounded number on the next line. And I am done! Now lets do a few together. ”
 
The teacher writes the following numbers on the board and passes out the GP Worksheets and calls on students to complete the rounding, making sure they are following the steps just taught. The teacher should actively look for opportunities to correct misunderstandings.

2. 561,845 round to the nearest hundreds [561,800]
3. 762,892 round to the nearest hundreds [762,900]
4. 123,567 round to the nearest tens [123,570]
5. 891,985 round to the nearest hundreds [892,000]
6. 237,612 round to the nearest hundred [237,600]
7. 578,271 round to the nearest tens [578,270]
8. 730,348 round to the nearest hundreds [730,300]
9. 578,271 round to the nearest hundreds [578,300]
 
 
Independent (8 min): The teacher hands out the IND worksheet. Students are asked to complete the worksheet independently and turn it in. 
 
Closing (2-3 min): Teacher calls the attention of the students back toward the front of the class to quickly review the answers to the Independent Practice worksheet/ ask what we learned about.
