SWBAT solve one-step multiplication and division equations.

Students correct homework from board with problems shown.  Students will ask questions in order to review misunderstood questions

Mental Math

(8:40 – 8:50) /(10:10 – 10:20)

·         Teacher reads and reveals a series of 6 problems – helping students to think of strategies to help students solve the problems

·         Teacher pulls sticks (cold call) to have students answer the questions

·         Students answer questions mentally, if stick is called they can answer and explain their answer choice.

Mini Lesson

(8:50 – 9:25)/(10:20 – 10:55)

Opening:

·         Review inverse operations

·         Review three guiding questions:

o    What is the variable?

o    What operation is being performed on it?

o    What is the inverse operation?

Intro:

·         Last week we started to solve one-step equations.  As you remember, a one-step equation is an equation in which you need to do just one operation in order to know what the unknown’s value is. 

·         Today we are going to continue to work on one-step equations but we are going to work with multiplication and division equations. 

·         Review different ways that multiplication and division can be written – Multiplication: with parentheses/with the variable and coefficient written right next to each other Division: with a division sign or as a fraction – numerator is the dividend and denominator the divisor 

·         Inverses:  x and division. 

·         Review using the inverse to solve a one-step problem.

·         Show an example (one division, one multiplication) to the students – have students focus on the steps

Guided:

·         think pair share –what are the three questions to ask your self when solving a one-step equation. 

·         With students solve an additional one-step multiplication and division equation

·         First equation should be with whole numbers, then with fractions (and negative integers)

·         Review the steps

 Independent:

·         Students will independently work on solving equations.

·         Students will move to working in pairs to solve equations  

·         Pull advance group to work on multiplication/division equations with fractions ex: 2/3 d = 30

Closing: 

·         What is the inverse of multiplication?  Of division?

·         What are the three questions you should ask your self when solving these questions?

·         What are the steps to solving a one-step equation. 

 

Skills Time

(9:35- 9:50) /(11:05-11:25)

·         Hands on equation materials – students work in pairs – whisper level voices.
