Opening: · Yesterday we learned about key vocabulary for working with expressions and equations. · Who can tell me the difference between an expression and an equation? Equations have equal signs, expressions do not. · What are some of the vocabulary terms we learned yesterday? What do they mean? Variable, coefficient, term, · Today we will be using our knowledge of the vocabulary to translate words into mathematical sentences and symbols. Intro: · We know that math is just a symbolic way to represent real situations and words. Today we are going to be looking at words and translating them. · This is sort of like translating something from one language to another. At times it can be tricky but there are some key words to know that mean certain things · Complete organizer. · Model going through a couple of phrases of words to symbols. Guided: · Ask students to think about the words they see – which ones help you to know about which operation? · Which help you to know about whether it is an expression or an equation Independent: · Students will work independently to translate phrases to symbols. · Teacher will ask students to think aloud what they are doing as they solve problems. Closing: · What did we learn? · Why is important? · What are some common mistakes? · What does successful work look like/sound like? |
