Lesson: Fortune Cookie Verbs
Lesson Objective
Lesson Plan
Do Now:
Students will complete an assignment in the context clues do now packet
Introduction:
Today we will focus on verbs and using verbs in our writing. First we will view a Powerpoint to help us identify verbs in sentences. Then we work on a special project with fortune cookies. So let's begin.
Direct Instruction:
Teacher will show a PowerPoint presentation to students reviewing what a verb is and then identifying the verbs in sentences.
Guided & Independent Practice:
Discuss what a fortune cookie is. Explain that fortune cookies contain messages of advice or good wishes for the recipient.
Ask students to bring out a small piece of paper. Tell them to write a "fortune" on this paper. The fortune must state something positive (no death wishes, etc.)
Have students fold up their papers and place them in a bucket or container.
The teacher should then walk around the room, allowing each student to select a fortune from the bucket.
Each student will then individually read the fortune aloud, identifying the verb(s) in each sentence.
Example: You will win the lottery. Verbs: will win
They can also identify which are helping verbs, main verbs, and verb tenses.
Closing:
Write your fortune for the future. Where will you be? How successful will you be. Make sure you use at least two action verbs.
