Lesson Objective

Students will be able to apply different learning techniques in regards to comprehension, character analysis, literary elements (character conflict, setting, plot, point of view), to make connections and reflections and to make inferences.

Lesson Plan

(Prior to beginning a new chapter, students will be presented with a journal prompt for their do now that they will reflect upon and write about.   I recommend the journal entries be given roughly 5 - 7 minutes at the beginning of each class period.   These journal entries should be used as a springboard for a class discussion as well as lead into the discussion questions.)

Do Now:

How would you feel if your parents or guardian decided whom you would marry?



Introduction:
(Teacher Says)
Today we will begin reading Ties That Bind, Ties That Break.  While reading Chapter 1 think about the do now question and your response.


Direct Instruction:
I suggest reading the first few chapters together as a class.  Once students have a clear understanding of the setting and the plot I recommend assigning reading groups or independent reading so that the teacher can pull small groups of students that are struggling with reading comprehension.  



Guided Practice

After reading chapter 1, the teacher will select discussion questions that will stimulate interesting and educational conversation about the book.

  • Discuss three things that all Chinese girls were expected to do.

  • What was the difference between home schooling and public education?

  • Describe the members of Ailin's family.   Who were they and what were their roles?

Independent Practice

After reading the first chapter of Ties That Bind, Ties That Break , in groups students will generate a list of the characters in the book.   They will briefly discuss   a family tree is and its significance.   Then the groups will create a family tree chart of the Tao family structure and dynamics.   (Who is in charge?   Who is related to whom and how?)

Based on what you read today and your knowledge of context clues define the following words:
