### Lesson Objective

SWBAT describe a character using a trait word BY thinking about what the character says AND what the character does.

### Lesson Plan

• SWBAT describe a character with a trait word by thinking about what the character says and does.

Agenda:

• Focus the Learning:
• Hook:  I want to tell you a story about a character named Suzie.  Suzie and her best friend were at school when Suzie saw a glitter pencil in her best friend’s book bag.  “Where did you get that glitter pencil asked Suzie?”  “Ms. Webb gave it to me,” her friend said. “Its really cool, can I have it?” Johnna asked.  “I worked really hard and that’s why Ms. Webb gave it to me.  Maybe if you work really hard ms. Webb will give you one too.” But Suzie didn’t have Ms. Webb as a teacher.  She knew that if she didn’t have Ms. Webb as a teacher she wouldn’t get a glitter pencil.  Johnna thought about that pencil all during math and writing.  She wanted it so badly.  “If I just borrow it, my friend won’t even know its gone.  I’ll just take it home and use it tonight and then I’ll put it back in her bag tomorrow.”  When her friend was in he bathroom, Suzie reached into her best friend’s bag and took the pencil. She took the pencil home and used it to do her homework.  When her friend got home she reached into her bag to show her mom the cool pencil Ms. Webb gave her, but it wasn’t there…
• Build Background:  The things a character says and the things a character does tell us a lot about the kind of person a character is.
• Analyze the story from the hook:
• What did Suzie say?
• What did Suzie do?
• What does this tell us about the kind of person Suzie is?
• Suzie is sneaky.  I know this because she says she said she wanted to borrow the pencil from her friend without asking AND she took it out of her friend’s book bag.
• Intro to New Material:
• Introduce the character trait:
• Suzie was a sneaky kind of person.  (reveal on character trait poster)  People who are sneaky are (name the qualities of this kind of person).
• Connect to prior knowledge:
• I am thinking of other characters we know who are sneaky. Remember, someone who is sneaky is (review qualities).
• One character I know who is sneaky is Big Anthony in Strega Nona.  I know this because big Anthony makes pasta in the magic pasta pot when Strega Nona isn’t home.
• Raise your hand if you can think of another character who is sneaky.
• Have S share out.  Reinforce TQ sentence frame.
• Setting the Purpose:
• Today, we’re going to read a story about another character who is sneaky. As we are reading, think about what the character says and does that show us she is a sneaky kind of person.  At the end, we will talk about how what the character says/did showed us a lot about the kind of person she was, and how, as great readers, we figured these things out.
• Preview Story:  Today we are reading about a sneaky character in the Dr. DeSoto written and illustrated by William Steig.  Let’s read to see what happens and how the character is sneaky.
• Preview Vocab:  None
• Read through to “when the job was done.”
• Hmmm.  I’m thinking about the things the character said and the things the character did that tell us what kind of person he is. When I look at the details in the picture I see that the fox is looking at Dr. DeSoto like his is a snack and when I look at the author’s words I see that the fox is wondering what would happen if he ate the doctor.
• Turn and Talk:
• How did I figure out what the character said and did?
• I looked at the details in the pictures and thought about the author’s words to figure out what the fox did and said.
• What do these things tell us about the fox?
• The things the character said and did tell us a lot about the kind of person the character is.  The fox is sneaky. We know this because he is looking at Dr. DeSoto like he wants to eat him and he wonders if it would be possible…
• Read through to “just a joke he chortled.”
• Turn and Talk:
• What did the fox say?
• What did the fox do?
• What does this tell us about the kind of person the fox is?
• the fox is sneaky. We know this because he snaps his mouth shut while Dr. DeSoto is in there AND then says “just a joke!”
• Read through “the fox said to himself?”
• Turn and Talk:
• What did the fox say?
• What did the fox do?
• What does this tell us about the kind of person the fox is?
• the fox is sneaky. We know this because the fox says “no one will ever see you again!” AND plans on eating them.
• Read through to end of story.
• Turn and Talk:
• Hmmm is seems like there is another character who was sneaky in the story…
• What did Dr. DeSoto say?
• What did Dr. DeSoto do?
• What does this tell us about the kind of person the Dr. DeSoto?
• Dr. DeSoto is sneaky. We know this because he says he has a special treatment for the fox AND he glues his mouth shut!
• Was Dr. DeSoto sneaky like the fox or in a different way?

• End of story reflection:
• Character traits are words that describe the kind of person a character is – what the character is like.
• Quick CFU:  How can we figure out what kind of person a character is?
• The things a character says and the things a character does tell us a lot about the kind of person the character is.
• Today, we talked about characters who are sneaky.
• Turn and Talk:
• What is a sneaky kind of person like?
• What kinds of things do sneaky people say?
• What kinds of things do sneaky people do?
• How is a Grace a sneaky kind of person.?
• The fox is sneaky.  We know this because he says he wants to eat the doctor and he plans on eating them when he gets his tooth fixed.
• Dr. DeSoto is sneaky.  We know because he tricks the fox by saying he has a special mouth treatment AND glues his mouth shut.

Close:

• sneaky characters are (review qualities).  Today and every day, think about the things a character does and says and what that tells us about the kind of person they are.  Maybe you will meet more characters who are sneaky just like the fox or Dr. DeSoto.
