Course: 4th Grade Math
Course Description
Units and Lessons
1. Place Value
Resources: 30 15 day unit on place value concepts that includes writing/saying numbers in standard form, word form and expanded form. The unit also covers comparing whole numbers and ordering whole numbers. Below are a list of key understandings for this unit. - SW understand that place value explains how numbers are constructed and broken apart. - SW understand the value of a given digit, and its role in determining the overall value of the number it is in. -SW come away with stronger number sense, especially in regards to comparing the value of numbers. -SW understand that place value is applicable to many different math problems, and that they will be using it for the remainder of the year. A detailed look at this unit including layout of lessons, performance tasks, and GLEs/Common Core Standards covered are in a word document. |

Geometry
Resources: 34 Scholars will be exploring angles, transformations, 3-D shapes, and plotting coordinate points. Scholars will understand that angles, shapes and transformations are present in everyday life. |

2. Meanings Of Multiplication and Division
Resources: 35 This is a 11 day unit that covers the basics of multiplicaiton and divsion. Scholars will build an understading of the theory behind multiplicaiton and divison while also mastering their facts. This theory includes learning that multiplication is repeated addition and that divsion is the breaking a number apart into equal groups. It also includes a knowledge of the relationship between multiplication and division. |

|
3. Addition and Subtraction of Whole Numbers
Resources: 33 This is a 8 day unit that covers the addition and subtraction of whole numbers. The unit will review the basic algorithms for these 2 operations, and will place a heavy emphasis on regrouping according to place value. The unit will also present scholars with rigorous word problems that they will be expected to analyze and solve. |

4. Patterns and Algebra 2012
Resources: 4 This is a 10 day unit that will cover shape, number, and geometric patterns. Scholars will learn to identify what type fo pattern they are dealing with, as well as strategies to identify the rule of a given pattern. Scholars will also learn strategies to identify the missing elements of patterns. The algebra aspect of the unit will cover solving equations using inverse operations and writing equations derived from word problems. |

5. Multi-Digit Multiplication and Divison 2012_2013
Resources: 32 This is an 18 day unit that will introduce various ways to solve multiplication and division problems. Scholars will be taught how useful mental math can be when solving these types of problems. The main algorithm that will be used to solve multiplication problems is partial products (lattice box multiplication). The standard long divsion algorithm will be taught, but scholars will learn to write out their multiples for each divisor before they start the actual long divion process. The unit will also cover choosing the right operation (multiplication or division) in a word problem. The unit will strive to present scholars with word problems that they can relate to. |

|
6. Multi-Step Word Problems
Resources: 4 This is a 7 day unit that teaches scholars different strategies to help them solve different types of multi-digit word problems. |
333
|
7. Data and Graphs
Resources: 4 This is a 10 day unit that covers how to read, interpret and construct various types of graphs. The unit will also focus on how data and graphs can be used to better understand history and culture. |
235
|
8. Fractions: Understand Fractions and Equivalent Fractions
Resources: 46 This is a 13 day unit that reviews a basic understanding of fractions and equivalent fractions. The main scholar take aways of this unit are understading that fractions are parts of whole numbers and that fractions, fraction sets, and fraction regions may look different, but can represent equivalent fractions. |
337
|
9. Fractions: Comparing and Ordering Fractions/Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions
Resources: 30 This is an 8 day unit that covers comparing and order fractions. It will also begin to explore mixed numbers and improper fractions and their relations to fractions and each other. The unit will attempt to relate its concepts to scholars' lives and cultures. |
305
|
10. Fractions: Adding and Subtracting Fractions
Resources: 4 This is an 11 day unit that will cover the addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers. It will also cover word problems that involve the addition and subtraction of fractions. The unit will try to relate these problems to the scholars' lives. |
168
|
11. Understanding Decimals
Resources: 49 This is a 1o day unit that will teach a basic understanding of decimals. It will relate decimals to whole numbers, place value, fractions, and money. The unit will also attempt to realte decimals to scholars' real life, culture, and history. |

|
13. Measurement: Measurement Word Problems
Resources: 4 This is a 10 day unit that will cover perimeter, area, and elapsed time. The unit will also touch on other types of measurement word problems, but they will not be the units focus. The unit will attempt to introduce the above concepts within the context of situations that relate to the scholars' lives. |

|
14. Geometry 2012_2013
Resources: 52 This is a 14 day unit that will cover angle identification, angle composition and deconstruction, 2-D shape identification (by property) and symmetry. The unit teach these concepts in a real life context, focusing on how geometry is all around us on a day to day basis and that many jobs require a knowledge of geometry. |
