The search for water and food A person struggling to survive in high latitudes needs a large amount of food and water to maintain strength and compensate for moisture loss. We should not forget that the construction of a shelter and signal structures, and simply movement at low temperatures, cause an accelerated consumption of energy, which leads to an increase in the body's need for food and water. Water Fortunately, in high latitudes you will not lack water. Numerous streams, ponds, other water bodies, as well as ice and snow are excellent sources of fluid. But at the same time, remember that all water received from water bodies must be boiled. If muddy water is defended from a reservoir, all mechanical impurities (clay, dirt) will settle to the bottom of the dishes - sump. IN NO CASE do not eat un melted snow or ice - this will lower the temperature of your body, increase the loss of fluid by the body and, in addition, can cause colds. To obtain potable water from snow and ice, design a melter. Survival in extreme situations. SAS Experience Place snow or ice in a piece of clean (preferably natural) fabric, tie the corners of a piece of fabric to the tripod supports, under which place a container for water. Place the melter near the fire. The heat from the fire will melt the snow, and moisture will ooze from the cloth bag into the container. Food In snowy and ice-covered areas, you can find enough food, both plant and animal, quite accessible to a person in distress. In order to find food, you only need to know where to look for it and at what time it is available. FROM US ARMY EXPERIENCE Icebergs as a source of fresh water. Icebergs made up of fresh glacial water are a potential source of fresh water for those in distress at high latitudes, but BE CAREFUL. Remember the following rules designed for the US Army: • Be wary of icebergs: even the largest of them can suddenly roll over and tip people in distress into the water, which can lead to fatal consequences. • Do not drink water flooded from young sea ice. To get water, use old ice, which has a blue or black tint and crumbles easily - such ice does not contain salt. • Ice and even snow can be salted by seawater or spray. If water melted from snow or ice has a salty taste, do not use it for drinking. PLANT FOOD. The following Arctic and northern plants can make an excellent addition to your diet, especially their nuts - nutritious food that supported many people who traveled at different latitudes at different times. RED (SHIP) PINE. Description: can reach 25 m in height, needles are dense, yellowish-green. Edible parts: young shoots can be eaten both raw and boiled. The bast is edible after boiling. Needles can be brewed to produce quinous tea (see the chapter on first aid). BLACK PINE. Description: smaller than ship pine, needles shorter. Edible parts: young shoots can be eaten both raw and boiled. The bast is edible after boiling. Needles can be brewed to produce quinine tea. LABRADORIAN TEA. Description: evergreen shrub, reaching a height of 30–90 cm. It has elongated leaves with twisted tips and a whitish or grayish wrong side. The flowers are white with five petals. Edible parts: from the brewed leaves, a delicious tonic tea is obtained. ARCTIC WILLOW. Description: small round leaves, the color becomes lighter from the stalk to the tip, yellow small flowers. Edible parts: young spring shoots, leaves, bast and roots, peeled from the top layer. |

Here are their principles for building shelters and shelters. • Do not sleep on bare ground. Use insulating materials such as pine or spruce feet, shavings, dried grass, moss, or foliage. • Do not cut trees that are too large in size to build your shelter - to build a shelter from such a tree, you will spend much more effort and a cord for bundles. • Poles that take up the main load should be the strongest and thickest - because the whole structure of the shelter rests on them. • Do not throw your equipment on the ground. It must be compact, otherwise you risk losing its elements. • During the construction of the shelter, burn a fire - it should be used as a heat source, to improve mood. Boil water at the stake in order to drink tea after work. • Use diagonal bundles ending with straight knots to connect the structural elements of your shelter. If you are building shelter from blocks of packed snow, you will need a knife with a file, a saw or a machete in order to cut the blocks. The snow from which you will make the blocks must be strong enough to support your weight without sagging. Try to find a hole in the snow or a snow wall to cut blocks from a vertical surface - this is much less tiring. It is worth the time spent searching for the right snow, without voids and layers of lower density in its thickness. Blocks should have a size of approximately 45 × 50 cm and a thickness of 10–20 cm. When building shelters and shelters in snowy or ice-covered areas, always remember the following points: • Never place the tool on snow - you will lose it. • Never be in a hurry, you will be in a hurry - you will bring trouble or get into trouble. • Work in conjunction with nature, never fight with it. • When constructing shelter, drink as much fluid as possible - otherwise you risk dehydrating the body, and this is very dangerous. • During construction of a shelter, spend as little energy as possible; stay as close as possible to the source of fuel for your fire. • To compensate for the warming up of the body during operation, remove some clothing. If this is not done on time, your clothes will quickly soak and then stop protecting from the cold. • When looking for a place to hide, be sure to explore its surroundings. • When building a shelter in the summer, remember that insects do not tolerate smoke, wind and the smell of certain plants (such as wormwood). • Remember that in the shelter it is necessary to lay a heat-insulating floor of pine or spruce paws, shavings or other material to protect yourself from moisture and cold. USE OF THE SHELTER. Regardless of the type of shelter that you have built in high latitudes, remember the following principles, following which will make your life in a shelter much more comfortable. ENTRANCE TO SHELTER. Limit the number of shelter entrances in order to reduce heat loss. In addition, given the limited amount of fuel for a bonfire, tightly closing the entrance to the shelter will save fuel for you. ACTIVITY. If you need to go outside from shelter, along with your affairs, collect firewood for a fire, heat-insulating material, as well as ice and snow to replenish water supplies. Do not waste time. WEAPONS. If you have a firearm, it is better to store it outside the shelter, otherwise moisture will begin to condense on it. This can cause the moving parts to freeze and corrode, resulting in misfire and weapon failure. NATURAL NEEDS. Whenever possible, take refuge. It is best to dig an adjacent cave in the snow and use it as a toilet. If this is not possible, use empty cans for carrying urine out and snow blocks for stool. THERMAL INSULATION. In any case, isolate your body from the ground with a thick layer of heat-insulating material, even when you sleep in a warm sleeping bag. Improvisation. Outerwear can perfectly fit as a mattress, a shirt and underwear can be rolled up into a roll and used as a pillow. SLEEPING BAGS. Sleeping bags should remain dry, clean, and unpacked. To dry the sleeping bag, turn it inside out, knock it out in the cold and hang it in the heat from the fire. CAUTION - Do not burn the sleeping bag! SNOW. Before entering the shelter, carefully shake off all the snow from the clothes. At the entrance to the heated shelter, the snow will melt, and then, when it comes back to frost, it will turn into ice. Remember that keeping clothes dry is much easier than drying them out later. FROST. If you freeze at night while sleeping, do the exercises - raise your legs while lying on your back, tap your bedroom bag with your hands. |
