Course Description

This particular course focused on modern American history. The units covered everything from the Civil War to 21st century events such as September 11, 2001 and the war in Iraq. In addition to the historical lessons, the course covered various economic and geography topics in order for the students to truly understand the reasons for and the development of major historical events.

The following unit explores the causes, events, and consequences of the American Civil War. The unit begins with a lesson that lays the ground work for a discussion about the outbreak of the war by looking at the economic, geographic, and cultural differences between the North and South during the 1800s.

After the Civil War, America began the rebuilding of a nation. This unit explores the attempts by the government to bring together a broken union, deal with racial issues, and protect individuals who had been discriminated against since before American independence. This unit also takes a close look at the shortfalls of Reconstruction and how the policies of the federal government and the Jim Crow Laws of Southern states set up a century of discrimination in many parts of the country.

What it Means to be American: A Look at U.S. Civics Resources: 54

The following unit explores the foundation of American civics. While the unit is rather compact, the lessons touch on various topics such as: the Preamble of the Constitution, Bill of Rights, citizen responsibilities, and the amendment process for the U.S. Constitution. In addition, the lessons within this unit encourage students to think about how American civic norms differ from those in other countries.

The following unit explores the cultural, economic, and political environment of post-war America until the end of the end of the Cold War in the late '80s. The development of the Cold War and its subsequent "battles" is one theme of the unit. Another theme presented in the unit is the rise and accomplishments of the Civil Rights Movement. Both themes are broad and good for students who are being exposed to the subjects for the first time.
