In first grade we teach children how to decode in order to read. Children also need to know the meaning of words in order to gain reading comprehension. This routine will help students learn and retain the meaning of new words.
In this lesson, students will take a more active role in their learning by discussing a read aloud with their partners. The teacher will become more of a facilitator in the lesson and allow the children to "wrangle" with the content.
We all have sight word vocabulary that we're supposed to teach our students each week. This lesson will not only show how students can learn to decode and spell the words but to retain the words because they are using the words orally in sentences.
