Big Idea:In this lesson we are going to read the second chapter of Number the Stars as a whole class. I will be stopping and prompting questions that require students to infer and draw on details from the book.
Big Idea:When part of a literature study, there are many new vocabulary words that student can and need to learn. In this lesson look for these words and then try to create definitions using context and use the dictionary to confirm.
Big Idea:To help students be more confident and fluent readers, a reader's theater can help build their expression. It is a fun way to include all students in reading and also helps them gain a deeper understanding of the text.
Big Idea:When reading with a partner students can practice checking their understanding of what they have read by having quick and meaningful discussions. Partner reading also helps them work on fluency and other reading strategies.
Big Idea:Every two chapters, I have students learn six new vocabulary words. In this lesson, students will use the iPads to find their definitions and work in groups to create a sentence to share the meaning and to teach the class the new word.
Big Idea:To evaluate students' understanding of Number the Stars they will be giving evidence from the book that supports one of the book's themes. They will learn what a theme is and find evidence to support two of the themes they feel best fit the story.
