I am married to my high school sweetheart going on 25 years with two daughters and a son who all attend CSU Fresno and are involved in playing sports for the university. I began teaching later in life after I became retired as a firefighter for Modesto City Fire Department. I initially studied to get my Montessori teaching credential and taught in a Pre/K/1st classroom. Soon after I attained my BA in Business Management from University of Phoenix and took over management of the Montessori school along with teaching in my own classroom. Four years later I chose to continue my education with the goal of entering the public school education system after I noticed the lack of interactive, inquiry-based learning in our local schools. I completed the teaching credential program through CSU Fresno and taught with SUSD at Taft School in 4th and 6th grades. I made the choice to accept a 4/5 teaching position at Vincent Shalvey Academy, an Aspire Public Charter School, because of the "college for certain" and "every student can learn" educational beliefs they have as the motto of their education system. I teach in a lower socio-economic area of Lodi/Stockton, Ca. I am the lead 4/5 teacher at Vincent Shalvey Academy, and have had the opportunity for these past three years to be a integral part of the Bill and Linda Gates Foundation TCRP College Ready Promise Program as one of four selected test schools around the U.S. chosen to help build a teacher effectiveness program. I have worked hard to improve my practices and attain a rating of "highly effective teacher" by my principal, peers and parents. I love the direction education is taking in our state with the Common Core changes and feel proud to be a teacher at our wonderful school and to be working for an organization which focuses on putting our childrens' education first.
