Today, we are so proud to announce that Leigh Ann Roehm, a former BetterLesson Master Teacher, has been named the 2023 recipient of the PAEMST award for science in Michigan. This prestigious recognition is a testament to Leigh Ann’s 21 years of dedication to education and her incredible impact on students and colleagues alike.
The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) are widely recognized as the highest honor given by the U.S. government for K-12 educators in these fields.
Every two years, the White House recognizes one mathematics and one science teacher from each state for their dedication to advancing STEM education. These educators are celebrated for their innovative teaching practices, exceptional content knowledge, and ability to inspire the next generation of critical thinking future scientists and mathematicians.
A Teaching Philosophy Built on Connection and Discovery
Leigh Ann, who teaches seventh-grade science at Saline Middle School, practices a teaching philosophy rooted in building meaningful relationships and fostering curiosity in her students. Her classroom is full of hands-on experiments, real-world problem-solving, and a supportive environment where students feel empowered to take risks in their learning. Leigh Ann’s innovative use of Standards-Based Assessments and flexible learning spaces exemplifies her commitment to personalized, impactful education.
As a Master Teacher for the National Education Association’s BetterLesson Master Teacher Project, Leigh Ann developed over 80 middle school science lessons that continue to inspire educators nationwide.
Lessons like “Properties of Waves: Making Waves Visible” and “Rubber Band Cannon Lab” showcase her creativity, attention to detail, and dedication to making science accessible and engaging for all students.
Beyond her classroom, Leigh Ann is a leader in STEM education, having presented at numerous conferences, including the Michigan Science Teachers Association and the Association for Middle Level Education. Her work has influenced not only her local community in Saline, Michigan, but also educators across the country who have benefited from her expertise and passion for teaching.
A Well-Deserved Recognition
This recognition by the White House is a well-deserved honor for Leigh Ann, whose contributions to science education are immeasurable. It also reflects the power of mentorship, collaboration, and continuous professional growth—values we hold dear at BetterLesson.
