On the Common Core
BioI have taught third grade language arts at Hamilton Elementary School in Columbus, Ohio for four years and taught sixth grade in the same district for the three years prior. Before coming to Hamilton, I taught third and fourth grades in a private school that catered to dyslexic learners. It was here that I learned the Orton Gillingham Approach and was accepted as a member of the Association of Orton Gillingham Practitioners and Educators. Currently I serve on our school's Principal Advisory Committee, am an active member of our Reading Improvement Committee, and support others in my grade level as a Team Lead. I am a big believer in balanced literacy and follow the workshop approach to reading and writing instruction in my classroom. In lesson and unit planning, I follow a backward approach using the “Understanding by Design” method. I'm passionate about creating engaging materials to accompany lessons for my own students and helping to support my community of teachers. I am excited to be part of the Better Lesson initiative - both to share what I know and to learn from so many others!
