BioAlthough teaching runs deep in my family roots, my entry into the education profession was not immediate. Growing up, I was the child who repeatedly said, “I will never teach”. I had witnessed the long hours and minimal pay and I felt that I was capable of something different than what “mere teaching” as a profession had to offer. So I initially chose another path and pursued a career in healthcare management for 15 years. It wasn’t until six years ago that I began to consider my purpose in life and I answered the call to teach. My decision to walk away from a six figure career was not an easy one. But, as I considered what I truly wanted to be “when I grow up” and I removed the psychological constraints of money and so-called "prestige", I acknowledged that there was no other role that I performed better or with more passion than teaching. My decision to enter the teaching profession in an urban setting is one of the best decisions I have made in my adult life, and while at times I miss the salary and perks of my former career, I have no regrets regarding my choice to become an educator. Teaching allows me a daily opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of students. I am motivated and excited to teach in the classroom and I really enjoy the adolescent population I serve. My sense of accomplishment in education begins and ends with my students. A student told me, “You make me feel smart”. Comments like this give me a great sense of accomplishment and help me know that I am affecting positive change in the classroom.
