About Mary Ellen
BioMy principal described me once as a "diagnostic and process oriented teacher" which is essential to implement Common Core Standards,...but she also once termed me as a "schmover"...a smiler and a mover! I guide math "schmoving!" I want kids to love math and science, like I do, as I write lessons that focus on confidence and joy in learning. I deeply value writing/communication integrated into math and science, and strive to develop lessons that support that value. I am so happy to be be a part of the Master Teacher Project again this year, which allows me to share my best with you as we transition into this very exciting time of conceptual teaching of mathematics and science that Common Core & NGSS demands. I have taught all subjects in 4th grade for 15 years and continually look to differentiate and integrate. I developed integrated local and maritime history curriculum for Social Studies while earning my Master Degree in 2003. In 2006, I was part of an area math consortium for an in depth study of conceptual teaching of mathematics. In 2011, I became an NBCT. This very self reflective process gave me a deeper appreciation for my gift of being an educator. My year as an MT for BetterLesson last year was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. I am so honored and thrilled to be part once again!
