About Amelia

Bio
I have had a love of patterns since I was a tiny girl. All through elementary and high school, this translated into a passion for art and design. Mathematics was always easy for me but didn't hold the same interest as art. However, I did have several opportunities to do some math tutoring which was satisfying. I started my college career by studying art education. After taking Pre-Calculus, I decided it might be interesting to take Calculus for fun even though I didn't need it. It was at this point that I realized that math had as many beautiful patterns as art so I decided to switch my major. I received my bachelors degree in mathematics education from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio in 2003. I promptly moved out west to Caldwell, Idaho where I have been teaching at Vallivue High School for the last 11 years. I am currently teaching a remedial sophomore course, Algebra 2 and College Algebra. I love my job and my students, and look forward to spending twenty plus more years perfecting my craft. I spent several years as the newsletter editor for the Idaho Council for Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM). I have attended many ICTM conferences, two NCTM conferences, and one T-Cubed conference. I have also been at the forefront in my district's implementation of the Common Core. In 2013, I was given the amazing opportunity to work with the BetterLesson Master Teacher Project. My love of art never left me, even though it didn't end up becoming my career, and extended into crafting as an adult. I consider myself a serial crafter/artist as I have tried just about everything including knitting, sewing, scrap booking, paper cutting, Zentangle and watercolor to name a few. My new goal is to start an art journal for myself and my two young daughters. I am excited to help them find their own passions and watch them grow in to amazing young women.
