Tiered Vocabulary Lists

Jennifer tiers her math vocabulary lists to provide both scaffolded support and challenges of varying levels. The tier-1 words are represented in blue. With these lists, the students write responses and communicate their analysis of problems. This enables Jennifer's students to utilize the precise mathematical language for this unit.

Lesson Notes

I show students the simple polygons powerpoint as a quick review of specific vocabulary we have discussed in the previous two lessons. It also introduces some enrichment terms for the geometrically curious! I've included my vocabulary list in which I've indicated essential (Tier 1) terms in blue. I use this to ensure that I'm checking on my ELL students to provide extra support with these words, as needed. I've also included Tier 3 words to provide spelling and syllabication support for students who want to challenge themselves with these out of level words. Time permitting, I would sort these words by part of speech to assist language learners in using them in oral sentences for their explanations and debates about polygons in architecture.
