## Classroom Video: Checks for Understanding - Section 2: Play of the Day

# Apply properties to general equivalent expressions

Lesson 3 of 10

## Objective: SWBAT apply the properties of exponents to generate equivalent expressions.

## Big Idea: Focus on equivalence! Push kids to use ALL of the properties of exponents together - a great lesson for consolidation, review, and meta-cognitive thinking.

#### Warm Up

*10 min*

Each day, students complete a Warm-Up that usually consists of spiraling the previous day's material, in addition to older material. Warm-up problems also sometimes extend lessons that students have encountered before to more unfamiliar contexts.

For a video narrative about how I structure each lesson, and how the warm-up fits in, click here.

#### Huddle

*10 min*

I like to Problem_12 for the huddle for this lesson. By pushing kids to circle more than one answer, I feel like the question reaches a higher level of rigor, and it pushes them to apply all of the properties of exponents together. It is at a higher level of rigor, because it does not allow students to find one right answer and choose it without fully understanding each answer choice - this way pushes kids to really evaluate each expression.

I also push my students to identify which properties they are using for each one to push their retention of each of the properties of exponents.
