# Introduction to volume of 3D solids

Lesson 1 of 2

## Objective: SWBAT understand and apply the formulas for volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres.

For the huddle, I like to review Problem 7, which pushes kids to explain WHY the formulas for teh volume of solids work the way they do. I find that if they can reason WHY on a particular formula, they will retain it much better.

It's also great practice for kids to explain their reasoning, yet again.

Deborah - thanks so much for your kind comment! I am glad that you found the "nesting" idea powerful. I too have used the GeoSolids; in fact, in the most recent iteration of this lesson, I actually compared a cone and a cylinder that had exactly the same radius and height. We filled the cone up with water and showed that we could pour three of these into the cylinder; hence, the volume of a cone is 1/3 the volume of a cylinder with the same height and radius.

Thank you so much for sharing your "nesting" idea with the formulas. I am anxious to use this with my students to build on each formula. I have used the GeoSolids to show the cone and hemisphere inside the cynlinder for a visual. This explanation will make those even more powerful.
