Day 2 - Rude Giants
Lesson 2 of 3
Objective: SWBAT use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events.
Today we are going to continue to dive into the key ideas and details of the story. We will use those reading strategies of asking questions about the text and the illustrations to describe our characters and events in detail so that it will help students to understand the story. This addresses standards RL1.1 and RL1.7. We are also going to be working on the skill of using commas in a series when we answer our questions. This addresses standard L1.2c. I am excited about today's lesson because not only does the lesson focus on strategies that good readers use to understand the story but we also have grammar skills embedded into the lesson. I love to embed my grammar skills into lessons instead of completing boring worksheets. I feel like students will be getting an authentic application for this grammar skill, and research supports that this way of teaching grammar has more of an impact on student learning.
For today's lesson you will need either your Smartboard Rude Giants.notebook or Activboard Rude Giants.flipchart lesson and the book "Rude Giants" by Audrey Wood. Students will also need their packets from yesterday.
Students had new partners today. It is important to me to make sure my students work well with all their classmates. I have several resources for you to group your students creatively. Just click here: sorting sticks.pdf, PickYourColorPartner.pdf, and TheGrouperthefastandeasywaytogroupstudents.pdf.
Students were sitting at their tables and I stated the objective. I said, "Today we are going to continue with our story. I will reread pages 12-13 from yesterday. We will use the illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, and events. We will also ask and answer questions about key details in a story."
I reread pages 12-13. I said, "Person 1 - tell your partner what you think Beatrix has taught the giants so far in the story." We had our partner talk and then had a class discussion where students could state what they had thought using evidence from the story. Then I said, "Let's look at page 3 on our student packet. Let's read this question together. What do you think Beatrix has taught the giants so far in the story? Use evidence from the story to support your answer." I gave students several minutes to finish writing their answers in their packet.
Using Details in the Story to Determine How Beatrix Taught the Giant Manners - Independent Practice
I read pages 14-17. After reading, I went to slide 14 on the Smartboard. I said, "Page 17 shows how Beatrix taught the giant manners. Can you find the evidence for this? Think carefully first and then think about what evidence supports your answer. You will need to use this evidence in your answer."
Then I said, "Turn to page 4 in your student work packet. Beatrix did three things to teach the giants manners. This is called a series. You will have to put a comma after the first two reasons. We have done this before so I am just refreshing your memory." Students answered the question on page 3 of their student packets. The students supplied the answers, citing evidence from the text, and put the commas in a series.
Using Details in the Story to Determine How Beatrix Taught The Giants to Be Beautiful- Independent Practice
I continued reading. After reading page 21, I said, "On these pages, it shows how Beatrix taught the giants to be beautiful. Can you show me evidence either from the text or the illustrations how she did that?"
I said, "Go to the bottom of page 4 in your student packet. Let's read the question together. Remember: the question says that you have to show 3 ways Beatrix taught the giants to be beautiful. You will need to use evidence from the text. We just practiced using commas in a series. You will have to do this again." Then I gave the students time to work on their answers. I did have audio problems on the video, but you can still see my students writing their answers here: Writing About how Beatrix Taught the Giants to Be Beautiful.mp4.
After my closure yesterday, the students begged me to have Summary Sam come back again today. Since this is a 3 part unit, I decided that Sam could come out and see the kids every day during the unit. Our cat puppet, Summary Sam came out and the students summarized the lesson for him. You can watch the video, Our Closure - Day 2 Rude Giants.mp4, to see how our closure went.
