Comparing and Contrasting the Firsthand and Secondhand Accounts of My Life Changing Event

Objective: SWBAT compare and contrast the firsthand and secondhand accounts of their own life changing events.
In this unit, we have compared and contrasted the secondhand account of "The Story of Ruby Bridges" by Robert Coles with the firsthand account "Through My Eyes" by Ruby Bridges. Next, I had the students interview a friend about a life-changing experience and defend the right about that life-changing experience. The students then wrote about the life-changing experience themselves. In this lesson, students will compare and contrast the stories they wrote about their life-changing experience with the story written by a friend.
To begin this lesson, you will have a class discussion where I will ask the students to remind me the differences between the firsthand and secondhand accounts of the story of Ruby Bridges. I will then ask the students to be looking for the similarities and differences in their own stories as they work with their partner.

Sharing Our Stories
The students worked so well together outside well interviewing each other about their life-changing experiences that I am going to allow them to work outside again for this lesson (weather permitting.) I will instruct the students to find a comfortable place where they can relax and enjoy sharing the stories they've written with each other. I will have the students pair up with the person they interviewed in our previous lessons and together they will read both the firsthand accounts and secondhand accounts of their life-changing events.
Once the students have finished sharing their stories, I will bring them back into the classroom where I will have them really think about the similarities and differences between their first-hand account of their life-changing event and the secondhand account written by their friend who interviewed them. For this I will have the students make two columns on a piece of paper labeling one side similarities and the other side differences.
To wrap up the lesson, we'll talk about the similarities and differences we found between our firsthand and secondhand accounts and whether or not these similarities and differences were the same as the similarities and differences we found in the firsthand and secondhand accounts of Ruby Bridge's experiences.
