# End of Grade Review - Unit Rates

Lesson 2 of 11

## Objective: Students will be able to calculate unit rates of real world problems without a calculator.

#### Launch

*10 min*

**Opener: **As students enter the room, they will immediately pick up and begin working on the opener – **Instructional Strategy - Process for openers**. This method of working and going over the opener lends itself to allow students to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, which is **mathematical practice 3.**

**Learning Target:** After completion of the opener, I will address the day’s learning targets to the students. In today’s lesson, the intended target is, “I can calculate unit rate and use it to solve real world problems.” Students will jot the learning targets down in their agendas (our version of a student planner, there is a place to write the learning target for every day).

Guided Notes: To recap this concept, I am going to go through some quick notes with the students. I am hoping that they will be able to facilitate these notes :) Additionally, at their tables, students will solve a few problems. We have been doing these all year through openers, but I want to make sure that kids are remembering to set them up correctly and are dividing in the appropriate order (if not their answer will be upside down!!) These problems really tie in **mathematical practice 8**, as students can use patterns from one problem to the next to help set them up correctly.

Coloring Activity: To finish off this lesson, I am going to have students work at their table groups to to complete the unit rate questions. This activity is a self-checking color by answer, so the students can relax, color, and talk unit rates!
