# Toss the Ball- Trigonometry Review

Lesson 2 of 3

## Objective: Students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of trigonometric functions.

## Big Idea: Correct answers get you a shot at the big bucks! Students will enjoy this ball toss review game.

#### Warm Up

*5 min*

I include **Warm ups** with a Rubric as part of my daily routine. My goal is to allow students to work on **Math Practice 3** each day. Grouping students into homogeneous pairs provides an opportunity for appropriately differentiated math conversations. This lesson’s Warm Up- Trigonometry Review asks students to explain whether an angle can have a negative sine, cosine and tangent.

#### Toss the Ball

*45 min*

This review game really engages students. I group the students into threes or fours. With each problem, students individually solve it on a paper that will be turned in at the end for points. Each group then collaborates and writes their common solution on a white board. I have all of the groups hold up their boards at the same time and each that has the correct answers gets an opportunity to toss a ball into a set of buckets for points. I place three baskets (found at the dollar store) at different distances. I use the points 100, 200, and 300 for the buckets, the farther away the more points.

I have a couple of pointers to mention to ensure that this game runs smoothly. First, I set the expectation that all students do the problems. Nothing ruins a review like group dynamics where one or two students do all the work. Second, the pacing has to be carefully managed. The students need enough time to complete each problem and then collaborate but too much time and too few problems will be covered. It doesn't hurt to go through each problem, particularly if some of the groups didn't get the right answer.
