Time Scavenger Hunt
Lesson 3 of 6
Objective: SWBAT identify the correct time and answer problems involving time.
What time is it? How did you know?
I have started asking students what time it is all throughout the day at random times so that they practice this skill within a real world context, as they become increasingly familiar with telling time.
I have all of these problems that involve time, and I’m getting all of the times mixed up! I have a bunch of questions on cards that I need you guys to help me solve. You’ll need to rely on all that you know about time to be able to do it.
Because the goal is success with solving these problems, I make sure to refresh students' thinking before we continue on to problem solving.
Who can tell me what the minute hand is for?
What are the lines between the numbers on a clock for?
What does it mean when the hour hand points between 2 times? (MP6)
Problems, problems. We're always solving problems together. Boy, you guys are great problem solvers so today you will go on a scavenger hunt to do more great problem solving.
I have posted questions all around our hallway and I need you guys to make sure you can solve them for me! You may work with a partner to help me with all of this work, but you will both need to record your answers on your own answer sheets. If you disagree about an answer, how should we address it? (MP3)

Wow great work today! Good thing you guys are so great at telling time, I might have had a hard time figuring out all of this work!
These questions can be asked in a variety of ways, depending on what you saw students doing. I often use a think-pair-share or turn and talk model for responses to keep all students engaged and reflecting on their learning instead of just calling on 1 student. You can ask a question and then have them talk to their partner about what was challenging or what they figured out that was new for them. This can also be used as an exit ticket by giving students 1 post-it and then asking them to record new learning for the day.

Why is it important to be very careful when you look at a clock to tell the time?
For students who had a hard time telling time to the minute or in smaller increments (5-10 mins) it will be important to pull those students the next day for a small group lesson. Time can be very tricky for students so it's important not to leave students behind and to catch misconceptions and challenges early.
