Digging Into Fractions
Lesson 2 of 10
Objective: SWBAT identify parts of a whole.
Yesterday we learned our new fraction vocabulary and we did some practice with what it means to have half. We also worked on some examples of fractions and finding the parts of a whole or parts of a set. Let’s see if this video has some knowledge to share with us.
I use a BrainPop video about fractions called ‘More Fractions’, but there are many other good choices available (Scholastic Study Jams!, LearnZillion and Khan Academy). This video identifies numerators and denominators and we find fractions as part of a set. It also reviews unit fractions and explores fractions that have a numerator greater than 1.
We review the Anchor Chart (from the previous day) to reinforce the vocabulary and structure of fractions and I introduce a Fractions Poem to students. We are learning about poetry in reading, so it is an easy connection for them to make. I also like to use a lot of songs, rhymes and poems to help students remember new things.
I’ve got a couple of questions on the board that I’m going to need your help with.
We create a definition of a fraction and I call on 2 students to solve problems on the board that ask them to illustrate an example of a fraction.
Here I want to ensure that they can draw (make sense of visual models of fractions), and articulate, that fractions must have equal parts (MP2).
It is always helpful for me to have important information in my math journal, just in case I ever need to go back to remind myself! I have 2 sheets that I think will help you as we move forward in fractions, and I want you to have these in your journal, too!
I have some examples for you to work on at your tables, but before you do, I want to remind you of 2 very important things. First, what goes on top? (the part) and what goes on the bottom? (the whole). Ok, you’re ready!
Student will cut and glue vocabulary into their journals and solve fraction problems that I have for them at their table. I use picture cards and word problems that ask students to solve fraction questions.
