Objective: , TSWBAT use adjectives to describe characters' appearance.
How do I Look?
I gather the students on the carpet and tell them that we are going to talk about one of my favorite books, The Hat by Jan Brett.
I know we read this book yesterday but this time when I read the story, I want you to listen and pick out the adjectives. Oh my! Who remembers what an adjective is? Turn to your partner and discuss with them what an adjective is. I choose several students to tell us what an adjective is. I don't think I remember what an adjective is. Maybe we should sing our adjective song. Sing . . . .
After singing the adjective song I ask...who can tell me now what an adjective is? Yes, it is a word that describes a noun. The names of animals are nouns. In this story all the animals wear clothes, so lets find out what they think about themselves. We will record our adjectives on this bubble map. I love using the bubble map. We get to fill in all the bubbles with the describing words.
In the center bubble I write the word Adjectives. Here I will record words that students identify that describe how the characters look wearing clothes.
Let's read the story and find adjectives that describe the animals. When we find them, I will write them on the bubble map.
Now that we have the adjectives from the book written in the bubbles, let's think of adjectives that we know.
As I read the story I pause on the page where Hedgie gets the sock stuck on his prickles. I ask, How did Hedgie describe himself with the hat? If they don't know, I will reread the sentence containing the adjective. "Embarrassing" is what Hedgie says and we discuss how that feels. I then write the word on the bubble map.
I stop after reading the page with the Hen, and ask how did Hedgie describe himself? He said his hat was "beautiful". I write it on the bubble map.
I stop on the gander page and say, The gander described Hedie as having "flipped his gizzard". That means he is crazy. Is that an adjective? Yes, let's write it on the bubble map.
I stop on the page with the cat and ask, How did Cat describe Hedgie? Cat said he was "silly". I write it on the bubble map.
The dog describes Hedgie as being "funny". The pig did not describe Hedgie at all, she just ran away.
I say, The pony described Hedgie's hat as being "ridiculous". Who knows what ridiculous means? It means the same as silly, funny and crazy.
Lisa, ran after Hedgie and described him as being silly. Lisa then told Hedgie that he was "ridiculous" and that animals don't wear clothes. Hedgie went into his den. Lisa found the other animals dancing and happy because they all had hats. How did they describe their hat?Magnificent! Magnificent, means WONDERFUL! At the end when Hedgie saw all the animals with clothes, how did he describe the animals? He said they were all ridiculous!
What do you think?
We review the bubble map and discuss the adjectives. I prompt them to add other words that they might know such as; odd, hilarious, awkward or weird.
I ask them to turn to their partners and use the sentence frame: I think the animals look _______. I call on a few students to share out their ideas using the sentence frame.
For fun we make up sentences using the pictures from the tree map and place the words in a pocket chart.
My students laughed at the sentences.
