Developing Presentations of Text Structures (Day 1 of 2)
Lesson 2 of 6
Objective: SWBAT compose a presentation in order to showcase their understanding of text structures in a creative and coherent presentation.
In my lesson openers I always have a "connect" in which I connect students' thinking about yesterday's lesson to today's lesson. I then have a "teach" in which I model for students the lesson of the day and also have them try it out. When I think about my modeling, I use three categories; skill, strategy, and process. I model by stating the skill to the students, then giving them a strategy in which to use the skill, followed by the process to try out the strategy.
Connect: I will say, “Yesterday we planned out our presentations using a planning sheet. Today you are going to start crafting your presentation.
Teach: I will say, I am going to practice the skill of using my resources. I am going to use the strategy of using my tips and planning sheets to guide me along the way. The process I will use is as follows:
1) Go over my planning sheet
2) Read the Tips for Prezi sheet if I get stuck
3) Complete the text first before I add pictures or videos
I will read over the tips sheet with the students and then let them independently use Prezi. I will remind them that we are using Prezi in order to be creative and have engaging presentations.
Even if they are working in a group, they will all have to complete a Prezi, then decide on which one they will use or use components of each one and made an additional Prezi. Here is an Example of How to Use Prezi.
Active Engagement: I will say, “Now you are going to start your Prezi. After about 10 minutes I will ask my different levels of learners their examples of what they have completed so far (at least 3 students-one who is at standard, one is approaching standard, and one who is above standard) in order to let me know what I need to go over or who I need to help first.
Closing of Active Engagement: I will say, “Remember successful presenters practice the skill of using their resources in order to guide their presentation. They use what they have prepared, use tips if they get stuck and concentrate on the most important parts before they move onto things like pictures and videos.
Independent Practice: Students will be then be directed to complete at least two text structures today; I will give them benchmarks along the way (about 15 minutes for each text structure). I will confer with them as they work.
I believe that the end of the lesson should be an assessment of the days’ learning; therefore it should be independent work. I always end class with an “exit ticket” in which students write down the response to a question.
For closing today students will “share” their Prezi with my by emailing it so I can determine what I need to go over for day two.
