# Addition and Subtraction of Integers - DOMINOES!

## Objective: Students will be able to solve a variety of addition and subtraction problems involving two or more integers.

**Opener: **As students enter the room, they will immediately pick up and begin working on the opener. Please see my instructional strategy clip for how openers work in my classroom (**Instructional Strategy - Process for openers**). This method of working and going over the opener lends itself to allow students to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, which is **mathematical practice 3**.

**Learning Target: **After completion of the opener, I will address the day’s learning targets to the students. In today’s lesson, the intended targets are, “I can solve mathematical problems involving addition and subtraction of two or more integers.” Students will jot the learning target down in their agendas (our version of a student planner, there is a place to write the learning target for every day).

**Dominoes Activity: **In this lesson, I am really trying to use **mathematical practice 7** - repeated reasoning, to help kids become more independent with these types of problems. Students are going to be solving addition and subtraction of integers problems using a dominoes format to check their work as they go. I am hoping that they will sense the repeated reasoning of the steps behind adding and subtracting, and thus become more fluent with the problems. In the previous lesson students relied very heavily on my assistance, so I really felt like they needed more time to work with the problems on their own before anything new was introduced to the mix. I will allow the students to work in pairs to correctly order their dominoes, but I will require all students to turn in a work paper so that all kids are held accountable for the work.
