# Assessing Combinations

Lesson 7 of 7

## Objective: SWBAT count a set of up to 20 objects, interpret and solve addition story problems, and find more than one combination to make 10.

## Big Idea: Is your teaching working? Today the students will show you what they have learned with their ability to find the total of two numbers that have a sum of 10 and their ability to record their thinking.

#### Warm Up

Using the ten frames that were created in lesson http://www.cc.betterlesson.com/lesson/513531/seven-apples-and-bananas. Once you go to this lesson, go to the warm up section and review the procedure. There is also a video of how to do this procedure and the actual ten frame cards to print off (if needed).

#### Assessment Problems

*60 min*

I start by explaining to the students that they will be solving two problems today. The problems will require them to use the skills that they have been working on when they have played games like Penny Flip and How Many In MY Hand. I explain that I want to see how much they have grown and will ask that they do these problems on their own. I allow kids to find a spot in the room that works for them. This way they can spread out and have space to work. There is a picture (titled own work space) that show a student working on the floor.

I then read the first problem to them (see problem 1 in the section's resources). I will project the problem with my document camera so that everyone can see the task. I read the problem twice and then have them find a spot to work. I will have a bin of counting cubes out for them to use.

As students finish, I will read problem 2 to them individually and then have them solve that one too. Problem 2 is also in the section's resources).

Note: As the students are working you will want to circulate and take additional notes (I use a steno pad) on how students approach the task. This along with their written work will give a clearer picture of how each student is developing. There is a picture of my notes in the section resource.

**CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.A.1 & CCSS.Math.Practice.MP1 **The students are solving two story problems that require them to identify a starting point and make sense of the problem.

**CCSS.Math.Practice.MP2** The problems allow the students the opportunity to use relationships of numbers to find solutions.

**CCSS.Math.Practice.MP7 **The second problem allows students to recognize the the use of the structure of commutative property of addition.

The students are working on combining 2 numbers up to 20. This is a clear example of CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.C.6 .

#### Extra Practice

*5 min*

If students finish early, I will have them take two dot dice and a piece of lined (1st grade) paper and have them practice numeral writing. I will have them roll the die and write each number that is rolled and then the sum of the two dice as well. This will allow me to see all of the numerals and obtain another quick assessment of their ability to combine two numbers.
