# Equation and Inequalities Pre Assessment

## Objective: SWBAT solve problems using equations and inequalities.

#### Launch

**POD**

As student enter the room, they will have a seat, take out their **Problem of the Day** (POD) sheet and begin to work on the question on the SMARTboard. The POD also allows students to use **MP 3** continually based on the discussions we have about the problem each day.

The POD today will ask students to provide a definition of vocabulary terms they will need to know during the unit. I want them to put the terms in their notes so they can refer to them as a resource as we work.

Ratio Proportion Equation Inequality Graph (verb)

Most students tend to have difficulty grasping what a ratio actually stands for and means. When it is written with a numerator and a denominator, students don't always make the connection between the ratio they see and another comparison. I want to make sure that they define the comparison in their notes so they can use them as a resource when needed.

The target for the day is also on the SMARTboard each day when students enter the room. The target for today’s lesson is to determine student’s understanding of how to solve real-life and mathematical problems using expressions and equations.

Students will take a pre-assessment in class today to measure their understanding of using equations and inequalities to solve problems. They pre-assessment will be done individually and silently so that I can use it as a formative assessment to help guide the rest of the work we will do. The assessment items were adapted from tasks found at illustrativemathematics.com. There is an assessment item that uses an inequality and graphing as part of the solution and an item that will require an equation to solve. While students are familiar with the idea of “less than” and “greater than”, I need to know if they can use the concept of unequal values to solve problems. They have written expressions, can they use those expressions to solve problems. The pre-assessment will give an indication of the work we need to do to master the standards.

For the exit ticket today, students will respond to a prompt that requires them to use a proportion to solve a problem. This unit incorporates proportion and I want to see what students recall and understand about using proportions.
