# Write It Wednesday Introduction

## Objective: SWBAT use the Better Answers strategy to respond to extended response and short answer questions.

**POD**

As student enter the room, they will have a seat, take out their **Problem of the Day (POD)** sheet and begin to work on the question on the SMARTboard. The POD also allows students to use **MP 3 **continually based on the discussions we have about the problem each day. The problem of the day is: Show how you represent the problem 7/8 /3 using a picture. What is the answer to the problem?

I chose this problem to introduce the **WIW** strategy because it will give students an opportunity to use **MP 1** and **MP 4** while working on a problem that is standards-based.

**Learning Target**

The target for the day is also on the SMARTboard each day when students enter the room. The target for today’s lesson is to use the Better Answers strategy to construct answers for extended response and short answer questions.

I am going to introduce students to the Better Answers/Answer sandwich strategy. This strategy has proven beneficial in teaching students to create complete answers to short answer and extended response questions. I help students by giving them a framework for providing a valid answer.

We will start by working together to solve a problem. Using the answer generated by the class, we will critique that answer using the steps in the Answer Sandwich. I will introduce them to the strategy then we will generate an answer that meets the requirements outlined by the strategy and the rubric. When the rubric is introduced, I want to have students pull out important phrases in the sections as they compare the requirements for different point levels. These comparisons will help students develop an understanding of and the difference between partial and complete answers. This will help students support their reasoning when answering questions. We will then compare the original answer to the answer generated using the strategy and highlight the differences as a learning tool.

I want students to respond to this prompt to let me know that they understand the steps in the process and can describe the process. We will consistently use this strategy all school year. I need them to be comfortable with it.
