## Instructional Strategy - Process for Openers - Section 1: Launch

# Adding and Subtracting Integers - Real World Applications

Lesson 11 of 23

## Objective: Students will be able to identify and apply the correct procedures for solving addition and subtraction integer problems.

#### Launch

*10 min*

**Opener: **As students enter the room, they will immediately pick up and begin working on the opener. Please see my instructional strategy clip for how openers work in my classroom (Instructional Strategy - Process for openers). This method of working and going over the opener lends itself to allow students to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, which is **mathematical practice 3**.

**Learning Target: **After completion of the opener, I will address the day’s learning targets to the students. In today’s lesson, the intended targets are, “I identify and execute the correct procedure for solving integer addition and subtraction problems.” Students will jot the learning target down in their agendas (our version of a student planner, there is a place to write the learning target for every day).

#### Explore

*50 min*

**Color By Number:** Today students will work on a color by answer activity that I have created. Most students enjoy the opportunity to color, and in this activity students will uncover a hidden picture as they color their answers the appropriate hues. The Adding and Subtracting Word Problems Color Questions in the activity require that students make sense of problems and show work in different ways - drawing pictures, writing expressions **(mathematical practices 1 and 2). **Additionally, students will use mathematical expressions to model real world scenarios (**mathematical practice 4**).

#### Summarize

*2 min*

**Exit Problems:** To summarize this lesson, I am going to have students complete 4 exit problems on the back of their opener. The purpose of the problems will be for me to get one final sense of who still needs interventions before the upcoming test. In the next lesson students will be engaged in a group activity, and I want to make sure give students all the help that they need. See video!

What a nice lesson, students really enjoyed the diversion of coloring even if the concept seemed difficult to some. Thank you

I love your lessons!! I am teaching 6th and 7th grade math (collab, regular and high) this year!! I am sooo overwhelmed with all of the plans and to find material already done is helping me TONS with the planning!! Thank you for helping other educators!
