Reflection: Accountability Building and Reading Tables with Three-Digit Numbers - Section 4: Independent Practice

 

This lesson addresses two skills: reading and building a numerical table with three digit numbers.  I have chosen to spend instructional time having students build a table because I want them to understand WHY we use numerical tables and HOW numerical tables are organized.  By having students count cubes (or other small objects) and create a table,  they gain a greater conceptual understanding of how a table is constructed and further why it is easier to display information on a table.  This knowledge will allow them to use tables strategically as they encounter and use data in the future (MP5).  

After I taught this lesson, my students started suggesting that we make tables to display various information that we collected in math and other disciplines.  For instance, when we took a vote to determine when we would go out to recess, one of my students suggested that we make a table to display the results!  Students are able to make these connections and deepen their understanding when they are given a chance to experience the importance and usefulness this organizational structure.
