Reflection: Student Ownership Final Portfolio Creation - Section 3: Wrap Up and Next Steps


Today was very interesting. I'm not going to do a huge psychological analysis of this, though I think I could. What seems more important to think about is what this will mean in regards to my grading. This assignment isn't worth a lot of points, but I do want students to recognize that sometimes they are going to have to suffer the consequences of poor work ethic, even when it isn't their own. These portfolios represent an interesting real world opportunity for kids, as most of them will have to work in a group where someone doesn't pull their weight. I'm just not sure this portfolio assignment is the best place to teach this lesson. 

I was pleased with the dialogue/debate that I heard across my classroom while they were negotiating. A few groups excluded people completely, though many of the students who were left out of their group efforts already knew that was going to happen. One group had a very heated debate because the student who was excluded felt like he should be included, even though he had admitted to not reading the book and not doing his best work. On the whole, though, most groups, as I expected, were more worried about equal representation than choosing the best pieces.

Final Portfolio Creation

Unit 14: Literary: Dystopian Fiction Literature Circles
Lesson 13 of 13

Objective: SWBAT set rules for collegial discussion and decision making to create their final group portfolios.

Big Idea: Students will need to work together to determine what work is good enough to be in their final portfolio. This negotiation process will be difficult, but ultimately, important practice with the speaking and listening standards.
