Reflection: ELL Students Big, Bigger, Biggest - Section 3: Independent Practice

Students need independent practice, but supervised practice. I want to make sure they aren't practicing errors. Time does not allow me to circulate for half an hour as they practice each skill covered in a day. Therefore, I supervise for 5 to 15 minutes and then let them continue a variety of independent activities while I do small group instruction. I value the time I circulate because it is more effective to give them immediate feedback, than to come back days later with comments on graded assignments. You can see how my circulating in this lesson led to two valuable interventions, on the two extremes of the ability spectrum in my class. It also allows me to quickly determine if I need to reteach a lesson to the whole class, or, as in this case, to review the skill with a small group.
