Reflection: Student Ownership It's Your (Un)Lucky Day: Developing Cultural Literacy Through Analysis & Discussion - Section 4: Active Reading: "Friday the 13th: History of a Phobia"


The students were able to draw connections to their prior knowledge in this reading and review, as they shared their thoughts on the history of Friday the 13th. It's particularly worth noting that the quiet, more "goth-y" students really came alive today, sharing their thoughts and encouraged to open up. 

Update: Looking back on this lesson much after the fact, I trace the active participation of two of these students to today's conversation. I was able to communicate with and engage these students today, and they "bought in" to class most of the rest of the semester.

Unit 18: Cultural Literacy: Holiday Insights and American Traditions
Lesson 1 of 4

Objective: SWBAT draw inferences from an in-class reading on "Friday the 13th" in order to propel conversation, engage and incorporate others, and clarify and challenge ideas by participating in a class discussion.

Big Idea: Is Friday the 13th your unlucky day? Students examine possible origins for the superstitions surrounding the holiday and share their own superstitions.
