Reflection: Grappling with Complexity Line Plots & Rainy Days - Section 3: Independent Practice


Many of my students still do not understand the intervals on a number line. Constructing a line plot is a lot hard for them than I anticipated. They can analyze the line plot quite successfully.

My students were also weak on adding and subtracting fractions when we worked with them a few months ago. They are now seeing more relevance to being able to add/subtract fractions now, and I believe this may play a part in them being more successful with this now. (My students did very well with multiplying and dividing fractions previously.) We will start reviewing soon to end the year, and not be introducing any new material after this week. It's my hope that the students will continue to see more relevance and retain more.

If your student sare having trouble, then you might want to try partially filled in number lines that they would complete and “flip” to make a gauge. Every gauge would have different numbers missing from the gauge, so by the end they should have some experience creating a number line.
