Reflection: Intervention and Extension Comparing the Mason-Dixon Memory text with the animation of the story - Section 1: Lesson Opener

This animation not only helped students deepen their thinking about theme, it also really helped the students who still did not understand that there were two plot lines. Since there were two plot lines, this was a complex text for many of my students.

Grappling with a complex text is important for students to practice so that they have a tool box when they come across texts that are challenging for them. I have to be careful to have most of their reading lives be texts at their level, but then give them opportunities with guidance for complex texts.
