Reflection: Grappling with Complexity Tracking the Development of Central Ideas In "Self-Reliance," Day 1 of 2 - Section 5: Whole Class Discussion

This is the first time I address this standard. It was quite difficult because of the abstract nature of the task and because this is the first time my students have been asked to do this. I tried to come up with a list of specific vocabulary they could use to describe how these ideas interact and build on each other but the list was pretty short. The discussions they had in small groups were helpful in two ways. First, it allowed them to think aloud, which is always a benefit of discussions. Second, it allowed me to just listen in and get a sense of how they are thinking about this. A lot more students speak up when they discuss in small groups so it is often a better gauge of how they are handling a given task. They will be doing this again tomorrow. Hopefully, this was a good practice run.
