Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Let's Summarize Literature and Make A Movie! - Section 4: Student's Turn

Second graders sometimes struggle with identifying the main character in a story as the student. We discussed the idea of a main character to use ... who is really the 'somebody' for the organizer? This is a common difficulty for students, but a lot of it goes back to the real comprehension of the book. Students with a surface or literal understanding tend to name several characters, but those with a deeper comprehension can identify which character the story revolved around. We will continue this character identification and development throughout the year, as the idea that characters change over the course of a story and the plot develops around them is a standard in the Common Core.
