Reflection: Checks for Understanding Money! Money! Money! Symbols Create Images - Section 5: Students' Turn

Formative assessment is a valuable tool to see how much students understand as they are working. End of unit tests are helpful to see the overall knowledge, but it is just as important to see what they understand on a daily basis. Some of the most helpful information, for me, is for them to explain what they are doing as they do it. That gives me a peek into their thinking.

This student was using the wrong symbol when making a number sentence. I surmised that he was confused about the symbols, but that also led to a class discussion about checking their work. We talked about looking back to see 'What makes sense?'.  Does it make sense that a pizza is 10 cents?
