Reflection: Writing Across the Disciplines Charlotte's Web: How does it all begin? - Section 7: Recounting the first chapter

Upon reading their recounting of chapter one, I was pleased to read that most of them understood the gist of chapter one. A couple of students need support to move beyond surface recounting such as the writing piece:BasicRecounting.

I was happy to see that most of them also understand what it means to recount at this point of the year. There a few students who still provide more details than needed in their recount.

For example, the resource titled RecountingNeedsFocusButGetsGist This particular student is always eager to show what she knows. While I reminded them to keep their recounting to five sentences, I will need to remind this particular student to stay focus.

In the other piece Recounting the Chapter the students does a succinct job of recounting. This student has struggled with maintaing focus and this piece shows me she gets it and can express it nicely. I am happy to see this progress.

My students still need to improve their printing. While I like using these science journals that are provided by the school district, I don't like that the journals do not have lines with the broken lines in the middle. Second graders still need that support.

I have used Charlotte's Web for a couple of years now. But this is the first year that I have implemented the CCSS. What I have noticed with my students at this stage is that they seem better prepared for the reading. They seem to be more able to juggle more information at the same time. I believe this is due to the amount of reading we have done previously and the amount of informational text I have expected them to tackle at this point of the year.
