Reflection: High Expectations Question Everything! Asking and Answering Level Three Question - Section 3: Kicking it Upstairs: Level Three Questions


Asking sophomores to ask and be able to answer level three questions is a challenge for them, but since we began our look at short stories, I have planned to bring them to the point beyond identifying the "correct" answer, and exploring why it's "correct." I have high expectations of the students, and I feel, for the most part, they are loving up to them in asking these questions. As I circulated the room, I was able to get a glimpse of many questions that show both understanding of the stories and a deeper desire or ability to apply that understanding. A few notable responses:

1. Color is important in "The Open Boat" to describe the Ocean. Evaluate how effective the color of the sea is at showing the danger to the men on the boat. 

2. Mrs. Mallard was not happy in her marriage ["The Story of an Hour"]; predict what would have happened if she had not had a heart attack. 

3. What if Koskoosh's son came back for him ["The Law of Life"]?

Each of these questions ask a lot more than just "What happened in the story?" But, in order to answer them, the responder needs to know the plot, and why things happened. The last question needed context, I advised the student to ask or explain why the son would not have returned in the first place.
