Reflection: Rigor How Does Wemberly Change? - Section 2: Guided Practice

When my students gave me an emotion I would ask them, "How do they know?" and "Why do they think that?" I ask them to tell me which part of the story helped them come up with that. They were able to tell me the parts of the story that led them to these emotions and conclusions.

However, as I went through this lesson I realized that my students didn't have the vocabulary to explain the deeper understanding of the character changes. I was going to have to teach a lesson or unit with explicit vocabulary instruction. These lesson(s) would go beyond the simple words like sad, happy, upset, scared, etc.

Next year, I will want to frontload vocabulary instruction so that, in lessons like this one, students have the words they need to express themselves better.
