Reflection: High Expectations Writing Our Own Stories - Section 3: Independent Practice

 

One of the students I mentioned in the previous section, who had a hard time with her flow map last time, continued to have a problem with the flow map this time as well as just writing fragments in their story.  I had to bring her to the reading table and actually work with her one on one.  This student confuses me as a teacher because she's a very good decoder and has decent comprehension, but if I ask her to generate and speak a sentence she struggles.  This shows up in her writing.  She has improved some in her speaking skills since the beginning of the year and I attribute that to how much talking we do in my classroom.  I know that this particular students still has a long way to go and I will continue to work on this skill with her for the rest of the school year. 

I sat down with this student and had her read me that fragment.  I said, "Does this make sense to you?"  When she said no, I said, "How could you say that in a complete sentence so it does make sense?"  After telling me the sentence  I would have her say the sentence and count how many words were in the sentence.  I would have her count and say the sentence several times in order to build up her working memory.  Then I would have her write her sentences.  After every few words she wrote I would make her go back and use her rereading strategy to make sure she knew what word to write next as well as to make sure she wasn't leaving any words out of her sentence. 

I know that this is a skill that continues to be a challenge for her and I know she gets frustrated at times but I will continue to set high expectations for her because I know with continued effort on her part, she is capable of reaching those expectations that I've set for her.
