Reflection: Student Led Inquiry Overview of Quadratics-Essential Vocabulary - Section 2: Investigation


This portion of the lesson worked quite well because students had taken the time to read each statement individually and then predictively with a partner.  This processing time meant that students were very familiar with what each statement was saying by the third time through.  It was great to see students changing their mind (particularly around the x-intercept statement).  Based on the picture that I drew (which was intentionally misleading) most students said that all quadratics would have x-intercepts.  It was interesting to see them find that counterexample in picture #5 on the investigation.  

I also liked the way the statements were written in fairly plain language so that students did not get too caught up in vocabulary and hinder their understanding of the overall concept.  They immersed in the ideas first and then were able to connect the vocabulary to the ideas once they understood them.
