Reflection: Student Led Inquiry I'm 'Curious' About the Inferences & Predictions - Section 4: Teacher's Turn

 

As we were working on inferencing, one of my students mentioned the use of contractions. I was able to use this teachable moment to allow her and other students to practice the contractions we had been learning about in grammar and apply them in this lesson.  Research supports that teaching grammar in context in this way leads to more successful retention of basic grammar skills than teaching it in isolation.

These teachable moments can't be planned for, but should be taken advantage of. When students are able to generalize new skills from one lesson to another, they are models for others that what is learned in grammar can be applicable in reading (or other subjects).
